Site Preparation Cost for Concrete
Site preparation covers everything that happens before concrete arrives: clearing sod or grass, cutting and removing existing concrete or asphalt, excavation and haul-off, grading, imported base rock, compaction, soil pre-treatment and vapor barrier. It also covers placement access — a pump or line pump when a truck cannot reach the pour. Costs are quoted as an installed rate over the finished slab area.

What moves the price
- Existing surface removal — Removing and hauling existing concrete or asphalt is the single largest prep variable and carries a job minimum.
- Excavation and haul-off — Deeper sections, soft soil and off-site disposal are priced by volume, so thickness and depth drive the total.
- Imported base and compaction — Imported aggregate base and mechanical compaction are standard on driveways and structural slabs and add measurably over a simple grade.
- Grade and drainage — Sloped lots, retaining conditions and required drainage fall increase grading time.
- Vapor barrier and soil treatment — Interior slabs, garages and ADUs typically require pre-treatment and a vapor barrier, which adds to prep.
- Placement access — When a truck cannot reach the pour, a pump or line pump is required — typically an added $1.50 to $4 per square foot depending on area and distance.
- Grass and landscape difficulty — Dense turf, root systems, irrigation and hardscape edges raise removal cost over bare dirt.
