Insulation for Frost-Protected Foundations Abutting Unheated Slabs

When a frost-protected shallow foundation adjoins an unheated slab-on-ground structure, both vertical wall insulation and continuous horizontal insulation are required. These insulation components must be installed according to specific diagrams and tables in the residential code, and must be made of expanded or extruded polystyrene.

When a frost-protected shallow foundation meets an unheated slab, both vertical and continuous horizontal expanded or extruded polystyrene insulation are required, with certain parts needing protection from damage.

When a frost-protected shallow foundation abuts a slab-on-ground that is not heated to at least 64°F (18°C) monthly average, specific insulation measures are required to protect the foundation from frost. This typically involves both vertical and horizontal insulation components designed to prevent heat loss from the ground, even in Southern California's milder climate zones where frost is less common but still a consideration for specialized foundation designs.

Required Insulation Placement

For an unheated slab-on-ground, both vertical wall insulation and horizontal insulation are necessary. This setup ensures continuous thermal protection at the junction of the two foundation types. The vertical wall insulation must extend between the frost-protected shallow foundation and the adjoining slab foundation, creating a thermal break. Similarly, the horizontal insulation needs to be continuous, running underneath the adjoining slab foundation and through any shared foundation walls.

Both the vertical and horizontal insulation materials must be expanded polystyrene or extruded polystyrene.

Protection for Below-Grade Insulation

Any horizontal insulation placed less than 12 inches below the ground surface, or extending more than 24 inches from the foundation edge, requires protection from damage. This protection can be achieved by using a concrete slab or asphalt paving directly above the insulation. Alternatively, approved materials like cementitious board or plywood rated for below-ground use can be placed directly above the insulation underground.

When Insulation is Not Required

In contrast, if a frost-protected shallow foundation abuts a heated structure, where the monthly mean temperature is maintained at no less than 64°F (18°C), then horizontal insulation and vertical wall insulation are generally not required between the frost-protected shallow foundation and the adjoining heated structure. However, the insulation would still need to extend along the adjoining foundation for a specified distance if the heated structure is also using a frost-protected shallow foundation system. An exception applies for inside corners, where vertical insulation is not required.

Foundations that are adjacent to frost-protected shallow foundations must still be protected from frost themselves, in accordance with the residential building code. This ensures that even the conventional foundations are adequately protected against potential frost heave.
