Crushed stone footings are limited to Seismic Design Categories A, B, and C for general applications, meaning they are not permitted in the higher seismic design categories often found across Southern California (Orange, Los Angeles, Riverside, San Bernardino, Ventura, and San Diego counties). For areas classified as Seismic Design Categories D0, D1, and D2, building codes typically require more robust foundation types for exterior walls and certain interior structural elements.
Limitations on Crushed Stone Footings by Seismic Design Category
Building codes specify that crushed stone footings shall be limited to Seismic Design Categories A, B, and C. This restriction is crucial in earthquake-prone regions like Southern California. When a property falls into Seismic Design Categories D0, D1, or D2, which covers much of our service area, specific requirements come into play for foundation support.
For structures in Seismic Design Categories D0, D1, and D2, exterior walls must be supported by continuous solid or fully grouted masonry or concrete footings. This is a key departure from the allowances in lower seismic zones and highlights the need for stronger, more integrated foundation systems to resist seismic forces.
Why Are Crushed Stone Footings Restricted in Higher Seismic Zones?
In our experience, these limitations stem from the need for foundations to perform predictably and resist lateral forces during seismic events. Crushed stone footings, while suitable in areas with less seismic activity, generally don't offer the same integrated strength and resistance to shear and tension forces as reinforced concrete or masonry foundations. The continuity and reinforcement of concrete footings help a structure act as a unified system, better able to withstand ground movement without differential settlement or structural failure.
When Concrete or Masonry Footings are Required
If your project is in a Seismic Design Category D0, D1, or D2, you will likely need continuous concrete or fully grouted masonry footings for several parts of your structure:
- Exterior Walls: All exterior walls of buildings in these higher seismic categories must be supported by continuous solid or fully grouted masonry or concrete footings. This ensures a strong, continuous load path for seismic forces.
- Interior Braced Walls: For larger buildings (with plan dimensions greater than 50 feet) in Seismic Design Categories D0, D1, and D2, required interior braced wall panels also need to be supported by continuous solid or fully grouted masonry or concrete footings. This reinforces the interior structure against seismic activity.
When these concrete footings are used in Seismic Design Categories D0, D1, and D2, they also have specific reinforcement requirements. For example, concrete footings must have minimum reinforcement as specified by code. Similarly, slabs-on-ground that are cast monolithically with turned-down footings need not fewer than one No. 4 bar at the top and the bottom of the footing, or one No. 5 bar or two No. 4 bars in the middle third of the footing depth.
